So I got Daniela to put up this video of Romulus so that I could write about what’s going on with him at the moment. To be honest I’ve been tempted to make a case study out of this for any of my veterinarily inclined followers, but I’m still functioning more as a terrified owner than a vet student so I can’t.

For those who aren’t up to speed, this is Romulus, he’s a four year old mini lop who is possessed by the spirit of Gryffindor (which sometimes compels him to do stupid things like get stuck in furniture and fight dogs). We’re best friends and I got him in first year uni and decided to spoil him rotten to see how tame you can make a rabbit (really tame, I can put his head in my mouth without him caring). He’s my part-time coblogger (less active now that I don’t live at home all the time) and once ran for President with promises of biscuits for all.

Romulus has a middle/inner ear infection which has affected his vestibular system (so his sense of balance is shot to pieces). Because of this his head has been stuck on the side for the past two weeks…this head-tilt is a common sign in rabbits and can mean all sorts of things. For Romulus the pressure of the infection on his nerves is causing all the trouble. It makes it hard to eat and drink and he’s got really bad vertigo right now, so he feels pretty crappy. This really sucks for him, because as I said, his favourite thing is running around and being a nuisance and pestering the other pets (also eating biscuits).

Rom is on medication at the moment (two antibiotics, oral enrofloxacin and injectable propacillin, fenbendazole to fight protozoans, an anti-nausea drug, metacam for pain, eye creams for an ulcer, and periodic appetite stimulants), but the problem with rabbits is that it’s really hard for antibiotics to work properly because when rabbits get infections they wall them off in abscesses full of solid pus, and they won’t drain and can’t be penetrated. Rom has an inner ear clogged with the stuff and none of his antibiotics are working.

So the specialist vet we’ve been taking him to is going to operate on him tomorrow. The hope is that we can debride out a lot of the pus and relieve the pressure so that he can regain some of that nerve function.

UNFORTUNATELY

my family is in a crappy financial situation and has been for the past couple of years. We get by but don’t have any expendable income lying around. I can’t work because I’m off all over the place trying to graduate so that I can help owners of bunnies with head-tilt (that was the whole point of vet school when I decided to do it back when I was seven). One of my dogs just had $2500 cruciate surgery last week, and so far Romulus has racked up around $1500 in vet bills over the past few weeks.

There’s no question about doing the operation…it has to be done. But it’s expensive and we don’t have a lot lying around at the moment. So here is where I apologise and then beg for help…if any of you have any money lying around and would like to help Rom out we would greatly appreciate it. He’s my best little buddy and I love him to bits and it’s really painful to see him like this, especially when I’m constantly having to go away on pracs, especially when I’m so close to being a vet myself.

I keep having to remind myself that it’s the lionesses that do the hunting and killing and get their faces soaked in blood I mean is there a more badass animal

There’s a reason male Leo’s are traditionally terrified of their female counterparts, a bold as they can be.

my favourite thing about lionesses is that there are certain branches of them that grow manes because they are so bad ass

My favorite thing about them is that they actually choose who they want for the head of the herd.

Lions are popularly considered the kings of the jungle but the truth of the matter is the lionesses, the queens of the jungle, should have much more recognition.
